Name: Kido go Boom Device

Appearance: A small black remote about as large and round as a softball when deactivated, but the size of a watermelon when in use. Small, multi-colored buttons cover the whole outside and a thin wire mesh coats the inside. When in use, little prongs stick out and make it seem like a sea urchin.

The charged translucent shells shrink back down to their base size when not in use, allowing Kurokotsu to conceal them easily.

Uses: By inserting a clear marble-sized orb into the deactivated device and pressing a series of keys, it is activated. The marble inside as well as the apparatus outside both grow, until the black outer shell forms like a second skin to the sturdy translucent inner shell. By grasping onto the prongs that protrude from the surface, one can focus their reishi into it. As one calls out the name, number, and incantation of a specific kido, the energy from it is siphoned into the inner shell, where it is kept in peak condition until released.

By either crushing the orb or bringing it into contact with the enemy, the energy inside is released and thus the Kido is cast, without using up reishi or standing still performing incantations.

How many can be used per fight: Five per fight, unless the fight is of large importance in which case Kurokotsu will ask Sotaicho Zafaron for permission to carry more.

Which five kido are most often contained in these shells: One is Rikujokoro, one is Hainawa, one is Kyokko, one is Kido Net, and one is Bakudo number ninty-nine part one, Kin.

When are the shells charged: Typically, Kurokotsu will fill them with kido before a fight, but may also fill them up on the sidelines if he notices a fight is about to get worse and has run out.

Smoke poured out of every open window in the Twelfth Division Barracks where the Captain of that division was experimenting with his latest invention. Billowing out with the black smoke came various, inventive uses of curse words. Every third or fourth curse, components were listed. “Crystallized reishi, check. Orb of Sekiseki stone, check. Membrane of reishi-reinforced wire netting, check.”

He counted off; making sure each component of the outer device was perfectly in place. He’d woven the netting through small holes in the crystal reishi and into the Sekiseki, creating areas where the stone could split apart to expand and detract back into the small sphere. With a snap of his fingers, he insured the device still functioned properly in that regard; it was just having difficulties accepting the inner section properly.

“Maybe it’s the Kyokko-energized reishi inner shell that’s being rejected, the Sekiseki stone unable to coexist with it peacefully. Let’s try this, then…” He mumbled, weaving in a thin layer of stone that could lower the effectiveness of Sekiseki on any reishi beyond it, finishing the outer black section completely.

With renewed hope, the eccentric Captain placed one of the invisible orbs inside the device and pointed his finger at it. “Ye lord, mask of blood and bone. Flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of man. Truth and temperance, upon this sinless wall of dreams unleash but slightly the wrath of your claws. Hado thirty-three, Sokatsui!” He exclaimed, shooting the burst of pale blue flames straight into his device.

Amongst the whirring and clicking noises, the short, shallow breathing of the Captain was barely heard. He had been working on this for a long time, and did not want to deal with yet another failure. It was only when the noises stopped and the orb dropped into his outstretched hand did Kurokotsu have hope for this device.

Smiling to himself, the Captain flung the orb straight out a window and shot a thin stream of Byakurai at it, piercing where he knew the shell to be. With a loud sound not unlike the crack of thunder, it exploded. Pale flames shot out in a circle around it, the kido seeping out like helium from a balloon due to the small opening. It spun around rapidly, spewing out the flames like only a machine could.

Letting out a loud wahoo-like sound, the Captain turned on his heel and fed another orb into the machine. This time, he wanted to know how more defensive-minded spells would react to such a technique. He placed his hand lightly on the surface of it, chanting quietly. “Hado number sixty-three, Raikoho!” He called out, the bright yellow burst of energy flying into the object laid out before them.

Smiling softly, Kurokotsu watched as the sphere began spinning rapidly, absorbing the hado used on it. The clear inner orb popped out, yellow energy swirling around inside of it before going dormant. As the energy was subdued, the orb shrank down to the size of a softball and was deposited into a small container made of Sekiseki rock.

However, the second the orb hit the container, it exploded and sent bits of glass and stone flying everywhere. This time, nothing could control his rage. “Mother--!!!!”
